Visual Arts - Ms. Gordon
Hello, my name is Jennifer Gordon, and I am the visual arts teacher at P.S. 52. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and I have been a teacher with the NYC Department of Education for 24 years.
Art is a vital part of my life, and the joy I get from viewing and creating art is something that I strive to share with my students. As the visual arts teacher at P.S. 52, my mission is to help students discover their own unique artistic styles while developing an enduring appreciation of art. To help reach that goal, I have designed a program that is fully aligned with the NYCDOE's Visual Arts: Blueprint for Teaching and Learning and the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts in visual arts. Throughout the course of the school year, students in grades Pre-K-5 learn and build upon art skills such as drawing, painting, collage making, printmaking and sculpting. My students explore art and learn about artists from a global perspective, and are engaged in projects that invite them to use art as a means of self-expression and sharing and celebrating culture. I also seek to broaden the art experience outside of the classroom, which is why I work closely with outside cultural organizations to bring teaching artists and cultural experiences to our school and plan art-based field trips. Finally, I see art as a means to bring families and communities together, which is why each year I host family art workshops and community art projects.
All in all, I want my classroom to be safe place for my students to explore, create, and to take some meaningful steps in their lifelong journey as artists!
